Bristol Knut International Airport (Bristol Knut Lyfporte - Wessen) (BRS/WXBR) is the primary airport serving Bristol, and much of Wessex. Bristol Airport is located south-west of Bristol, approximately 7 miles from the city. The airport first began operations in 1936 as a civil aerodrome, alongside an Air Corps Base, until 1959 when it became a commercial airport, and underwent expansion. Bristol Airport has a licence that allows flights for the public transport of passengers and cargo and for flying instruction. Bristol is the main air transport hub for Wessex, mainly because it is the only airport large enough, and has the correct facilities to allow for larger long haul flights.
