Federation Air Forces Station Mombasa, also known as the Mombasa District Air Base, is a Federation Air Forces base located in the township of Port Reitz, in Mombasa, Huria. It is home to the Air Forces Combat Command's 23rd Air Force, comprised of three fighter wings and a bomber wing.

History[]

The airport was built during the Second World War by the Engineer Corps of the South African Army. During that war it was used by the Fleet Air Arm as a land base of the British Eastern Fleet which was based at nearby Kilindini Harbour from 1942, by the RAF which operated anti-submarine Catalina flying boats off the East Africa coast and by the South African Air Force which was engaged in the war against Italy in Abyssinia. The airport was originally known as Port Reitz Airport.

In June 2010, an agreement was reached between the Hurian Government and the East Asian State Defense Office for the Federation Air Forces to lease the airport land for use as an Air Forces base abroad. Work to upgrade the airport facilities to FAF standards began in August of 2010, and was completed in February 2011.

Facilities[]

Situated at 61 m (200 ft) above sea level, the base has two runways: Runway 1 measures 3350 m (10,990 ft) in length and Runway 2 measures 1363 m (4,473 ft) in length. Runway 1 is also known as Runway 03/21, while Runway 2 is also known as Runway 15/33. Runway 1 is equipped with an ILS (Instrument Landing System).

Barracks for air forces personnel are located on the north side of Runway 03/21. A full service commissary serves personnel and their families stationed on base.
