Gliese 581g, also known as Persephone, is a planet orbiting the star Gliese 581 in the constellation Libra. First landed on in 2031, by the WSS Somerset, of the Wessex Space Exploration Fleet. The planet was declared habitable for human life, and almost immediately a small colony was established on the planet, by both Wessex and the United Nations.
Gliese 581 is affectionately named Persephone, which refers to both the planet itself, and the colony. The planet itself has a strong tropical belt, and a large coverage of water. Wessex retains a large portion of the planet as a Wessen Interplanetary Territory.
Gliese 581g has been the focus of Wessen Scientific and Interplanetary Research, primarily conducted by the Wessex Space Exploration Fleet (WSEF), using Persephone as a staging post for missions further into space, and within the Gliese 581 System.
A large proportion of the planet is a self-governing Wessen Interplanetary Territory, meaning it is under the jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Wessex, but does not officially form part of the kingdom. The Colony, known as Persephone is lead by a Chief Executive, and the reigning Wessen Monarch is represented by a Governor General. The colony has a small legislature, the Legislative Assembly of Persephone, in which the 5 counties of the colony are represented.
