Iisalmi is a city and municipality in the province of Eastern Savonia, state of Finland, Ugrian Union.

History[]

Iisalmi lies between two historic population centers, Peltosalmi and Koljonvirta. By the late 19th century, both of these had obtained town rights, and the modern downtown was part of the surrounding rural municipalities of these towns. The decision to build a railway through the region resulted in the foundation of a new, more modern town, and the former towns were joined to the Iisalmi rural municipality surrounding the new town.

The rural municipality was absorbed into the city in 1965. Northern part of Runni municipality was absorbed into the city in 1988.
