Kalmakä is the official capital city of the Frecia. With a population of 3,125,966 citizens, Kalmakä is the second largest city in the country. Founded in 1539, the city was established as a port city and trade center for the recently established Colony of Frecia.

History[]

Foundation[]

Kalmakä was founded in 1539 by Greek, Bulgarian, and Romanian colonists escaping the iron rule of the Ottoman Empire in East Europe, and seeking a better life overseas safe from Europe. Having been discovered by Bartholomeu Dias in 1489, Frecia was an uninhabitated island that had been passed over by the European colonial empire in search of larger targets, and thus left Frecia unclaimed and uninhabitanted by any of their colonists. This left the island open for any prospective refugees desperate enough to gamble away their livelyhoods to start their lives anew. Shortly after the city of Neikios in 1509, the colonists began expanding outward toward other regions of the island, and establishing new settlements as they went.

Thirty years after the settling of Frecia, the colonists, calling themselves Frekians after the formation of Frecia as an independent nation in 1516, came across the natural harbor someways away from the city of Neikos. Seeing the viablity of this region as a major port, the Frekians applied their long history as a sea-faring peoples to the construction of the port city of Kalmakä, officially founding the city in 1539. Given the rise of the city's strategic location in the country, and the fact that it would serve as the main port of trade of Frecia in the years to come, the Frekian government moved to the city in 1561, officially transferring the capital of Frecia from Neikos to Kalmakä.

Expansion & Development[]

As the decades passed, Kalmakä grew to become the political heart of Frecia following the government's move to Kalmakä in 1561. This saw the formation of a political culture in Kalmakä, one where politics and business became a major handle of the city's population, with the political scandals and developments serving as a daily topics of coversation in the bars and pubs Frecia's politicians and nobles frequented during the government's off hours. The growth of trade with Europe saw Kalmakä's ports become increasing active with revenue fuelling the development of the city's business districts, and the growth of wealthy townships on Kalmakä's perimeters where the wealthy visiting merchants and travellers would spend their time with easy women and powerful political allies. Much of the money they spent went into the expansion of residential quarters of the city, which saw Kalmakä's population expand from 12,000 in 1575, to 50,000 in 1600.
