After Finnish tribes had conquered Kallavesi region from the sami, the city of Tavisalmi was founded in 329 to the place which is known nowadays as Päiväranta suburb. The city of Kuopio was founded in 1432 to its modern place. These cities were united in 1919. Since that, many other municipalities have been incorporated.
Kuopio has a surface area of 401.3 km², of which 155.2 km² is water.
The center is situated on Kuopio Peninsula, which divides Lake Kallavesi to two parts. The surface of the lake is 82 metres above main sea level. The is a big hill, Puijo, in the middle of the peninsula. The municipality spreads almost 20 km to the southwest of the peninsula.

There are hundreds of basic schools and upper secondary schools in Kuopio, but it's University of Kuopio that makes it famous. Its education in technology is considered one of the best in the world.
There are several hospitals in Kuopio, but the most known and appreciated is the main public hospital, Hospital of University of Kuopio, KYS (Kuopion yliopistollinen sairaala). Its area of responsibility covers over 2 million inhabitants.

Kuopio was the first city to relocate its motorways underground - MR 5 underground section of 10 km near the center was completed in 1979.
