Mandy and Mandy

From Constructed worlds

Mandy and Mandy was a Georgeland television sitcom that ran on Georgeland's Channel 12 from 1989 until 1994. The program starred stand-up comedienne Lucy Bishop and actress Rachel Malone as two namesake women sharing an apartment in trendy Santa Christina.

[edit] Premise

Mandy Braxton (Bishop) and Mandy Turling (Malone), referred to in the series and by viewers as "Blonde Mandy" and "Brunette Mandy" respectively, share a flat in Santa Christina as each has dumped their low-life, deadbeat boyfriend, which just so happened to be the same person, Joel Waters (William Howard), who was dating both of them at once. Drawn together by their mutual loathing for Joel and their general similiarity in outlook (both were modern, trendy women with unhealthy obsessions with clothing and hair), Mandy and Mandy eventually began their own fashion label.

[edit] Reaction

The show was highly popular in Georgeland, and recieved positive reviews throughout its run. Some criticism was levelled at the show for its somewhat unflattering portrayal of women in the early 1990s; the sketch comedy series Something Else From Something Else had a recurring sketch parodying the show entitled "Bimbo and Bimbo", which encapsulated many feelings about the show. However, the show's producers were quick to point out that while both Mandys were vain and fashion-concious, neither was stupid, and the two of them were easily able to extricate themselves from their situation without help.
