Messukylä is a district in Tampere and a former municipality of Finland in modern-day Ugrian Union.

History

The area of modern Messukylä district has been a population center before Christianity. The Aakkulanharju ridge was built to a "castle mountain" (linnavuori) during first millennium AD.

The still-standing Messukylä Old Church was built in 1023, which is therefore the foundation year of the parish. From its foundation to the year 1830, the parish was part of the kingdom of Tavastia. First unification of Finland brought the town to Finnish control until 1905, when a 12-year period of Russian occupation began. Since 1917, the area has been part of Finland, which has since joined the Finnic Union, which has evolved into the Ugrian Union.

The fortress at Messukylä has become under attack many times, the most noteworthy of which was the siege in 1591 by duchy of Ramo.
