Foundation[]
The municipality of Myhi starts to exist on January 1, 2010.
Under the current Finnish Law on Municipalities (95/2001), foundation of a new municipality is possible, if:
- 10% of the adult population in a well-defined geographical region shows support by submitting a common proposition to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, or
- a member of the Finnish Parliament proposes such foundation.
In this case, a proposition was sent by the people, and received by the ministry on April 23, 2008.
It included the names of:
- 12% of residents in the area of Myhinpää, Rautalampi
- 11% of residents in the area of Hanhitaipale, Rautalampi
- 18% of residents in the area of Ihalaiskylä, Rautalampi
- 9% of residents in the area of Hankamäki, Rautalampi
- 8% of residents in the area of Hoikankylä, Rautalampi
- 41% of residents in the area of Konneveentaus, Rautalampi
- 9% of residents in the area of Säkinmäki, Hankasalmi
- 20% of residents in the area of Armisvesi, Hankasalmi
- 14% of residents in the area of Vanaja, Paltanen
- 7% of residents in the area of Lahnanen, Paltanen
- 21% of residents in the area of Mataramäki, Paltanen
- 7% of residents in the area of Anttola, Suontee
- 14% of residents in the area of Kurikka-Kapee, Suonenjoki
- and below 5% in others.
Referendum[]
Under the Law of Municipalities, a referendum was held in the abovementioned area. Note, that 10% is needed in one region, but 5% is enough in the surrounding regions.
The voting in the referendum is secret, but residents can write their names on the ballots, in order to force their place of residence into another municipality than their larger area (but only if the residence would be near the border).
The referendum was held on September 7, 2008. Majority of the voters at Anttola, Suontee and Lahnanen, Paltanen voted "no", in other areas "yes". However, there was nominal forcing in the southern part of Vanaja, Paltanen, that split the area almost in half between the old and new municipality.
At Lahnanen, Paltanen, the northern part of the area (6 km² of total 30 km²) had only one adult as a permanent inhabitant, that forced the part into the new municipality.
Municipal elections, 2008[]
For the October 2008 municipal elections, voter lists were quickly reorganized. In the affected municipalities, the seceding areas were made into separate voting districts, so that on secession, the results in the areas can be deleted from the total votes in the municipalities. This means, the old municipalities can reorganize their councils without new elections a year later.

The municipality of Myhi will consist of:
- 68.19 km² previously of Paltanen
- 85.14 km² previously of Hankasalmi
- 167.20 km² previously of Rautalampi
- 54.94 km² previously of Suonenjoki.
