The Nauruan People's Republic, commonly known as Nauru (Nauruan: Naoero) is a sovereign island nation in Micronesia region of the Pacific Ocean. With 9,378 residents in a 21 square kilometre area, Nauru is the smallest state in the South Pacific and second smallest state by population in the world, behind only the Vatican City. The capital of Nauru is Yaren.
Settled by Micronesian and Polynesian people, Nauru was annexed and claimed as a colony by the German Empire in the late 19th century. After World War I, Nauru became a League of Nations mandate administered by the United States. During World War II, Nauru was occupied by Japanese troops, who were bypassed by the Allied advance across the Pacific. After the war ended, the country entered into trusteeship again. Nauru gained its independence in 1968. Nauru's economy was based off the island's Phosphate reserves. When the phosphate reserves were exhausted, and the island's environment had been seriously harmed by mining, the trust that had been established to manage the island's wealth diminished in value. To earn income, Nauru briefly became a tax haven and illegal money laundering centre. Westland became the largest aid donor to Nauru from 2003 in the form of Medical and Economic assistance. With the diminishing economic state and alleged political corruption of the island, many islanders demanded a change in the political and economic situation of the island and pushed for the establishment of a Socialist government modelled after its closest foreign country, Westland.
Following the establishment of the Nauruan People's Republic in 2006, the island's new government began to spend more in the public sector, improving the healthcare conditions, education provision, and creating more jobs through the development of new industries on the island with help in the form of bilateral aid from Westland, which became its closest foreign ally. Nauru became a member of the International Order of Socialist States in 2009 following sponsorship from Westland and the United Socialist Commonwealth.
Nauru is a Strassonist Socialist single-party state ruled by the Nauruan Socialist Party since 2006. The Head of State of Nauru, is the President of Nauru, who heads the 19-member unicameral Nauruan People's Assembly. Nauru is a member of the League of Nations, the International Order of Socialist States and the Pacific Islands Forum.
