Not to be confused with Order of precedence in Rhöntal
The order of succession of Rhöntal is codified in the Scharnwart house law of 1765 and in the Law for change of the order of succession of 1935. The succession is ordered by male-preference cognatic primogeniture. This means that sons are preferred before their sisters in questions of succession to the throne of Rhöntal. Since 1935 the order of succession is different to the one of the Landgraf zu Groten und von Groten-Redlingen as head of the House of Scharnwart who is still determined by salic law and therefore by agnatic primogeniture.
Through a curiousity in the House law of 1765, where it says "erbbar erlangen können alle Söhne die dem Herzog und seinem Vater geboren wurden den Rhöntaler Thron", (all sons of the duke and his father can inherit the throne) illegitimate sons of Dukes of Rhöntal and their fathers are eligible for the throne. Because of the phrasing of law of 1935 this includes illegitimate daughters.
