Qava, officially the Grand Sagedom of Qava, is an island country in the North Pacific, situated between Hawaii and the Aleutian Islands.

Etymology

Qava means 'to yearn with fiery passion' in Qavan.

History

Archaeological evidence confirms habitation of the archipelago for at least three millennia. The birth of the Qavan nation is attributed to Chief Qava, who by legend united the islands' warring tribes to establish the Rainbow Confederacy.

Contact came late in the 18th century, when European explorers opened the way for the Pacific fur trade. By the mid 19th century, contagious diseases had halved the indigenous population.

The US annexed Qava in 1899. Disorganized resistance by a diseased and demoralized population were swiftly defeated. American mainlanders did not significantly settle Qava until the Great Depression. The influx of migrant workers spurred the development of a robust shipping and railway system.

From the late 1930s onwards, revolutionaries set off a period of turbulence culminating in Qava's independence and the expulsion of American settlers. The Grand Sagedom of Qava was officially proclaimed in 1949.

Politics and government

Qava is the unique specimen of a sagedom. Ultimate political authority is vested in six sages.

Administrative divisions

Qava is subdivided into 8 provinces and one capital metropolis.

Geography

A volcanic archipelago midway between Hawaii and the Aleutian Islands, Qava comprises two main islands, Gonholavo and Gon'unlavo, respectively constituting 54 and 31 percent of the landmass and separated by the ? Strait. Bathed in the nutrient-rich waters of the North Pacific, the Qavan coastline extends 9,600 km and is dotted by more than 200 offshore islands, the majority of which are uninhabited. Main river systems include the Mamahashu, Qaqabahashu and Yayatshuhashu. Mount Zélafo forms the highest peak on the islands.

Climate

Qava lies in the north temperate zone and has a maritime climate with cool summers and mild winters. Rainfall occurs evenly throughout the year.

Regime shifts have had profound impacts on Qava's marine ecosystems, altering the distribution, survival and abundance of many species of plankton and fish in the North Pacific.

Economy

Qava boasts an oil-based economy centered on state capitalist principles. International prices for oil has driven Qava's growth rate since the early 1970s. While current economic policy focuses on developing non-energy sectors, oil and gas still account for more than half of Qava's GDP and 80% of export revenue. Proven oil reserves in excess of 9 billion barrels should enable continued output at current levels for several decades.

Demographics

After the founding of the Grand Sagedom, the population increased dramatically due to social stability and improved health conditions, reaching ? million in 1969.
