The Socialist Republic of Italy, commonly called Northern Italy or SRI (Italian - Repubblica Socialista Italiana, RSI) is a sovereign state in Southern Europe, located to the north of the Italian Peninsula.
Northern Italy shares a land border with Italy and borders San Marino to the south-east. The nation has a total land area of 22,452.78 km2 and a population of 4,448,488, with 11% of it originating from other countries.
Since 1995, the SRI is a dominant-party state, with the Socialist Party of Italy being the most elected party of the government.
As soon as the revolution started, the Army and the Fascists were warned about the uprising and tried to stop the protesters, but failed.
In 1924, the former non-socialist mayors and presidents of the affected provinces were declared dismissed. After that, a general election followed, where the population of the SRI could decide whether Emilia should be independent or not, and secondly, electing the new mayor or president of the province.
In 1925, the Revolution was over, with the Italian control being ousted from the region. Then, Northern Italy unilaterally declared independence from Italy and the Socialist Party wrote a new constitution, defining the newborn state as the "Socialist Republic of Italy".
On September 8, 1943, the nation was occupied by the Republic of Salò (puppet state of Nazi Germany) and, by the end of the year, Bricconi was arrested by the Italian Army; he was later freed in 1945.
However, in 1945, the Allied forces freed the country, a peace treaty was signed and a new president was elected. As soon as he was elected to the office, he ordered the arrest (and sometimes execution) of all the most important Fascist supporters within the territories of the Republic.
Northern Italy is divided into five republics (repubbliche), which are in turn divided into territories (territori), divided into districts (mandamenti); the districts are divided into municipalities (comuni).
