The Star W-91 is an assault rifle developed by STAR of Euskadi under licence of LCZ Group. It is based on theLCZ-B20 and is chambered in the 5.56x45mm NATO round. It uses lever delayed blowback operation, previously used on the LCZ-B20 platform and the 2B-A-40/TKB-517 assault rifles. The lever-delayed blowback operation of the Star W-91 increases accuracy, controllability, reliability and ease of maintenance of the weapon over gas-operation.
In the final 80's the company management valued the possibility of making an assault rifle to qualify for equipment contracts from Euskadiko Indar Armatuak and for export to traditional markets of their pistols and submachine guns.
Due to inexperience in the field of assault rifles, they chose to work on a platform already developed, proven and tested effectiveness. In 1990 an agreement was reached with the DDR (former Czech) LCZ Group which allowed the use of his rifle LCZ-B20 as an starting platfform to develop a new rifle to suit the needs of the potential market of the company.
