The Taiyuan Special Military District is one of six military districts for the East Asian Federation Land Self-Defense Force. It was established on November 26, 2011, by special order of the Federation Board. It has administration over the guard and protection of the southern border of the East Asian Federation with the Republic of China. Its headquarters is at Taiyuan Prefecture, Northeast China. A field command headquarters exists at Ruicheng, Yuncheng Prefecture.
Because of the strictly planned nature of the Land Self-Defense Force's personnel structure, the bill establishing the region also provided for heavy recruiting in lower Northeast China, through radio, television, and internet campaigns. The goal for the recruitment program is the fielding of 100,000 troops, a considerable increase in the size of the LSDF, reflecting recent tensions between East Asia and China.
Upon full operational status, the District is slated to have two full battle groups (the 29th Force and 30th Force), one armored division, seven artillery divisions, and ten anti-aircraft brigades. In addition to the dedicated LSDF forces of the Taiyuan District, FAF Station Taiyuan is being expanded to field the possible addition of a dedicated Federation Air Forces wing, and the Federation Maritime Self-Defense Forces to patrol the Huang He.
The military region commander resides at Taiyuan. The first and current commander is General Zhu Qi.
Plans call for a wall, dubbed the "Second Great Wall" along the border with China, to defend against attack. Artillery divisions assigned to the Military District will be equipped with rocket artillery designed to impede ground forces in the event of an emergency. Surface-to-air missile battery emplacements will be connected to the Integrated Defense Network for faster responses to unauthorized aircraft in East Asian airspace.
Despite both visible and invisible fortifications being constructed along the border, the State Office for Defense maintains that freedom of travel between the two countries must be maintained, and border pre-clearance with the Republic of China will be maintained except in the event of war, in order to keep families from being separated.
