Terraplén is the peninsular waterfront roadway in Ivalion along Ivalion Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean, built along a 18th seawall meant to serve as a fortification in case of invasion. Its name is Spanish for embankment.[1]
Terraplén's right-of-way begins at Center Street along the Atlantic at Redding Park, and travels north along the waterfront. It continues underneath the Henry James Bridge and westward towards International Plaza. After passing center street again, it continues southward, and ends at the Donovan Expressway.
History[]
Terraplén developed out of a patrol pathway for guardsmen garrisoning Fort Exeter in the 1750s. In the 1770s, around the time of the American Revolution, palisades were erected to make the seawall more defensible against possible attack. It was during this time that fishing was made popular along the eastern waterfront at cannon ports along the palisades. After the war, a fish market was established at what is now the intersection of Terraplén and Soledad Street. The market was extremely popular to locals, and as such caused large amounts of horse carriage traffic along the east waterfront. To remedy the near constant traffic snarls, the local government at the time demarcated "lanes" by marking them with poles jutting from the roadbed. As a result, the traffic problem only intensified and the condition of the roadway deteriorated. In 1796, the road was paved with stones to make maintenance easier for the city.
Along the western waterfront, a small seaport existed, whose main purpose was to provide piers for ferry service shuttling sea workers to the large Port of Ivalion on the opposite side of the harbor. A modern ferry terminal was built to replace the smaller port in 1872. Ferries remain an important mode of transport along the harbor, for tourists and residents alike; although in recent years, the Crossharbor Tunnel has provided faster travel across the harbor.

Several Ivalion Metro lines cross Terraplén on the peninsula, including the Dalton Local, Dalton Local Airport, Dalton Express, and Center Local. The Terraplén Local and Express travel under Terraplén for its length.
